And just in time to celebrate my birthday, you can grab Death at Peony House for just $0.99USD!

COVER REVEAL: Howl of the Fettered Wolf

The next book of The Invisible Entente is almost ready to hit the shelves (and thanks to The Book Company on Bank St, I actually mean that literally this time), so I think it’s time for a first look at what’s coming.

In Song of Wishrock Harbor, we learned about Gorgon-Fae Gabriel Mulligan’s longing for the vengeance demigoddess (or semi-goddess as she jokingly refers to herself), Vera Goodall.

Now we see the goddess in action — and she is not happy. An unknown enemy is coming after her most prized possession, and there is nothing she won’t do to keep it safe.

Howl of the Fettered Wolf is the fourth book in The Invisible Entente series. With only two more books to go, the path is being set for what’s coming. A tale full of twists and turns, love and honour, friendship and loyalty, Vera’s story is sure to play with your heartstrings.

You can grab Wolf on June 27th. Be sure you’re signed up for my mailing list for first notice for when it’s available, as well as updates on the upcoming books.

For vengeance demigoddess Vera Goodall, balance is everything. Her life revolves around her contracts, her bookshop, and her dogs, and there is no room for anything — or anyone — else. Every aspect of her life is scheduled, and delegation is a four-letter word.

But when someone attempts to steal The Book of the Fettered Wolf, an ancient text with the power to destroy the otherworld, Vera will need to break all her own rules to keep that balance from toppling.

With the help of Gabriel Mulligan, the Gorgon-Fae who threatens the walls she’s built around herself, Vera sets out to protect the book from those who wish to use it. Along the way, she unveils the lies that have created the foundation of her life, and each new revelation blurs the line between friend and enemy.

In the midst of chaos and intrigue, balance becomes a matter of survival. Vera must decide who to trust and how much to open her heart if she wants to protect the otherworld and everything she holds dear.

Leave sparkly behind and get back to sexy

There’s a new band of vampires coming onto the market, and they are bound to catch your attention.

Newfoundland author, Tanith Frost, is getting ready to kick off her “Immortal Soulless” series, a dark and sexy romp that follows reluctant vampire, Aviva, and her colleagues.

I had the pleasure of reading an early copy book, and it’s steamy, funny, heartbreaking, and so much fun. A great summer read. Which is great! Because that’s when it will be available (psst, same day as the next IE novel, so your summer is set)

Want a sneak peek into the first book of the series? Tanith is offering the first four chapters if you subscribe to her mailing list! Just click here to go on and do that — but then come back, there’s still the cover to share with you!

Her gifts will be her salvation… or her downfall.

No one gave Aviva a choice about becoming a monster. Since the night of her murder she’s been forced to accept a new reality—burned by sunlight, dependent on the blood of the living, searching for her place in a dark world she didn’t believe existed until she awoke as a vampire.

She’s still struggling to accept her fate and master her dark powers when the news arrives: rogue vampires are torturing and killing human residents of the city, threatening the secrecy and uneasy peace of the supernatural world.

As the hunt begins, Aviva’s deliciously distracting trainer, Daniel, helps her seek out her unique strengths. The gifts she discovers are shameful in the eyes of vampire society—and they may be the only thing standing between a pack of ruthless paranormal killers and the unsuspecting humans they prey on.

COMING JUNE 27, 2017

I highly recommend this read and hope that you fall in love with it as much as I did.

The Invisible Entente has come to play

As I continue to my spontaneous BLOG POSTS ABOUT EVERYTHING streak, I figured I might as well take the time to blog about my new book release. Because, y’know, I have one. S’cool. No biggie.

NO! WAIT! DON’T WALK AWAY! I’m actually REALLY EXCITED about this book release, because it marks my first steps into official urban fantasy. I’ve played with the genre in private for years, but I’ve finally worked up the courage to slip into a non-epic genre and build castles in a new sandbox.

“If you’re reading this note, I’m already dead.  I find even more pleasure in the idea that one of you will soon join me.”

At the precise moment of warlock Jermaine Hershel’s death, seven strangers are transported into a magically sealed room with only a letter from the dead man to explain.

If they want to go home, the way out is simple: discover the murderer — and kill them.

Tensions rise as each stranger reveals their connection with Jermaine, but the puzzle isn’t so easy to solve. At least one of them is lying. In an unlikely alliance, they have to act quickly to unravel the mystery before the murderer acts first.

Don’t get me wrong – I love and miss my Andvell gang, but the Invisible Entente is a brand new kind of trouble. Supernatural and mythological figures trapped in a locked-room mystery, tempers being tested (and when you have the power to set fire on things with your mind, that can be dangerous), and alliances being formed.

This prequel introduces the characters I’ve spent the last couple of months with and launches the first in a 7-book arc as it goes through each of the characters and culminates in…well, you’ll find out when you get there.

These characters are witty, dangerous, powerful, conflicted — all the good things you want to see in a bunch of reluctant heroes — and I hope you fall in love with them as quickly as I did.

The novella (130 pages) is available through Amazon for 99c or through KindleUnlimited for FREE, so grab a copy, brew a cup of tea, and then leave a comment below to let me know who your favourites are.

What’s next?

What is the title of your work in progress?

The Invisible Entente series

Book 1 – The Invisible Entente, a prequel novella

Where did the idea come from for the book?

I wanted to come up with some new content for my newsletter subscribers. I enjoy sending free short stories for my loyal readers. So I tried to come up with a new, exciting idea.

Recently I’ve been reading a lot of Agatha Christie novels and over the winter, BBC’s Poirot mysteries were my go-to to pass the cold, dark evenings. The more I watched and read and studied Christie’s style, the more I realized I wanted to stake a stab at writing a cozy mystery. Who doesn’t love the round-up at the end where the spunky detective accuses everyone in turn, building up the suspense until she denounces the real murderer?

But I’m a fantasy author, and I didn’t want to step too far outside my genre, so I brainstormed ways to merge the two – and the IE prequel was born.

Currently, this novella is available for free for my newsletter subscribers, but in another month, it will be removed from the subscription bundle and will be available to purchase via my usual ebook/paperback distributors.

From there, as it seems to happen, an entire series revealed itself. Each of the characters introduced in this round-table mystery is getting his or her own fantasy/mystery novel.

What genre does your book fall under?

Urban fantasy with a cozy mystery twist

What is a one sentence synopsis for your book?

Prequel: Following the death of a mad scientist warlock, seven murder suspects are transported into a magically sealed room and only six can leave.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Self-published – and I couldn’t be more excited about it. My team behind this series is strong, and the results will show it.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

The prequel took me a couple of weeks, but each novel takes me about a month. The rest of the work comes during edits and early outlining.

What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?

One of the elements I’m most excited to play with in this series is taking familiar creatures/characters from mythology and twisting them into new forms. Among others are a descendant of Vidar, the Norse god of vengeance and silence; a Gorgon-fae, the descendant of Medusa; and a sorceress from the line of Morgan le Fay.

Each character has a unique voice, and a unique perspective on the humanity they both live in and apart from. Each story touches on a different aspect of “otherness” and what it means to stand on the outside looking in.

I’ve got some really fun ideas for promo and can’t wait to get started.

Expected kick-off date: August 2016

Keri Lake’s Soul Resurrected – Blog Tour Stop

Today’s post is a very fun and exciting one. My good writer friend Keri Lake has a new book! You can read it. You should read it. How can you not want to? Just check out the smoulder!! In en effort to convince you to give Soul Resurrected a try (and once you’re hooked, you can pick up the first book Soul Avenged), Keri’s made The Raven’s Quill a stop on her blog tour. Check out a quick review, listen to the soundtrack that inspired some fan-waving scenes, then read an excerpt:

Soul Resurrected Banner

Whenever I hear  that Keri Lake has a new novel coming out, I do a happy dance. Ever since I read Halos: Somnium, Keri has made the jump to my Top 10 author list, and with each successive book, she keeps climbing the ranks. Soul Resurrected jumped her up two or three rungs. A sexy tale with a lot of heart, Soul Resurrected picks up where Soul Avenged left off, moving away from Aiden and Kane to tell the story of Wrath brother, Logan:

As Wrath’s fiercest son, Logan carries the scars of fifty years spent in the most dreaded prison of the underworld, for a sin he’d kill to keep secret. Enduring decades of gruesome torture has left Logan feared by and detached from others, until a female Alexi’s blood resurrects his soul from death and, with it, the pleasures he’s been denied for so long.

Plagued by shame of her own, Calla is drawn to the ruthless demon, Logan, whose insatiable craving for her touch rouses buried passions and, for once, leaves her feeling desired.

A dark and dangerous evil has been reawakened, however, and when Calla is drawn too close to its breeding grounds, Logan vows to summon the violence of Wrath in order to keep her safe. First, though, Calla must save him from a past riddled with deceit and corruption … but only if she can accept the chilling consequences of unearthing his vilest skeleton.

I could not put this book down. Trust me, I tried. I had to go to work! But the Kindle stayed on until the last possible moment and snapped back on the second my day was over. I was sad when it ended, until I realised: this novel lingers. The sign of a great book! Even now, certain songs will come on the radio and I’ll have flashbacks to my favourite scenes, to the intense emotions that fly off the page and work into the heart until I felt what the characters felt. And the best part? I know that right now, possibly this minute, Keri’s hard at work on Book 3: Soul Enslaved, which tells Gavin’s story.  The series is far from over and I couldn’t be happier.

To give added depth and texture to the world of Wrath, Keri hosts the soundtracks to all over her works in progress on her site. I asked her to talk a little bit about why. She answered:

This is always my favorite post to write because my playlist is essential to my writing.  I cannot get in the zone without those couple minutes in the morning that I sip my coffee and listen to my music.  It sets the tone.

For Soul Resurrected, I had two very damaged characters colliding.  I don’t happen to walk around with all the anger that Logan sports, so I found I had to get inside his head in order to write him.  For me, the easiest way to do that is music.  Deftones and Nine Inch Nails were just a couple of the bands I listened to in order to figure out what makes this guy tick.  He has a pretty disturbing past that I can’t exactly wake up at 4 a.m. and jump right into.

Believe it or not, Logan’s character didn’t exist in the first draft of Soul Avenged.  I’d fleshed out the other six brothers and had begun my first round of edits when a song from my playlist popped up, You’ve Seen the Butcher by the Deftones, and forced me to listen.  Not to the song.  To the deep and powerful voice that was growing louder by the minute.  As I read through the scene, set in the dark streets of Detroit where lycan wolves were on the prowl, a shadowed figure emerged—all smooth killer and no bullshit attitude.  Unapologetic.  He matched the psychotic character the song brings to mind every time I hear it.  And so, Logan came to be.

And Soul Resurrected is his story.

In fact, I have a completely different playlist for each of my books, if you’d like to check them out HERE.

And now, with the music in your head, I present the excerpt from Soul Resurrected:

CHAPTER 1

Some lives just weren’t worth the trouble of saving …

The dark room swallowed Logan, as he lay sprawled on his bed—just as he’d been left after ditching his date with death. A stomach-turning sensation of thickened skin and tingles swathed his body, closing in on him, phantom sensations crawling over his flesh that kept him awake. Every five minutes or so, he willed an arm or a leg to move. No go.

Shadows danced across the wall on the occasions that one of the Catatones guarding the mansion passed through the floodlight below his window. He focused on them only because his neck had been propped in that direction and he had no choice. Good thing, though. She had been assigned to watch over him and slept somewhere beyond his periphery, the reminder heating his blood every time her sleepy moan drifted across the room.

The fury could’ve split him right down the middle.

Her blood ran through him—pumping in his veins, feeding his heart, keeping him alive.

Calla’s.

The woman who’d gotten him stabbed with Demortis, the only element capable of taking down a demon, now swam through his body as the only element capable of saving him. Her blood. Pure. Probably the closest he’d ever come to being righteous.

The irony was enough to leave him scratching his own eyeballs out of his head—that is, if he could reach the damn things. Like a bitch slap from the gods, who probably sat around drinking beers over the shit, poking fun at him.

The side effect of returning from the dead?

Feeling like the fucking dead.

Logan tightened his lip, wishing he could kick his own ass for being so stupid. Not like he’d had to save her or anything. Hell, being a demon meant being the exception to human rules.

And being a son of Wrath meant never having to play by any species’ rules.

Yet for some reason, one lodged so deep inside his brain he couldn’t even begin to explain, he’d felt the need to intervene. Not so much for her sake, but because the little prick trying to rape her had taken a jab at the psychopath buried in Logan’s bones. Taunted him.

Then finally tripped his kill-switch.

Yeah, that’s what Logan told himself, anyway, because no other excuse could possibly justify why he couldn’t stir a single muscle in his body for anything having to do with her—Calla. The girl they’d picked up at some underground party, so high on Shine she’d have probably let every one of the brothers have a go at her if they’d been the ravaging bastardly types.

Lucky for her they weren’t.

“Should’ve walked away,” he muttered, his voice the only part of his body he could control.

A zing of pain shot through Logan’s feet, flexing them into an unnatural, paralyzed position. “Ah, shit!” Hadn’t his feet been numb just seconds ago?

Not even forcing his muscles to relax shook the sting away, one like a strike to the level of his bones, as if they shattered with impact.

He held his breath and clenched his teeth while the pain crept up his leg. “Motherfucker!” He spoke past gritted teeth, keeping his voice low to keep from rousing his babysitter, but damn, his back arched like one of those tetanus-infected bastards, his eyes squinting so hard they could’ve popped backward into his brain.

Black smoke curled behind his lids, and a deep laughter mocked him as the agony reached his spine. Trembling in the bed, Logan clamped his mouth shut and allowed the convulsions to run through him.

In silence.

He’d known pain—gut-turning, put-me-out-of-my-fucking-misery pain. Nothing compared to what wracked him at that moment, as if nightmares could invade the body and inflict injury. The burn, like molten lava oozing in his veins, seeped into his every cell, searing him from the inside. Sweat trickled down his temple at the same time as a chill burst deep inside his bones and swept through his limbs, leaving behind a wake of nausea.

That black smoke carried the familiar sensation he’d felt once or twice in his life—from the quick witted son of a bitch that brought the toughest demon males to their knees: absolute death. Stygius. The place in the underworld from where no soul ever returned.

With shallow panting breaths, he allowed the blackness worming its way into his mind to take over as something dark and wicked laid claim.

All Logan could do was let it take him.
